Devoted to Italian art of the early twentieth century, the Estorick Collection contains a representative selection of works by the Futurists, including Umberto Boccioni,s “Modern Idol” (1911), Carlo Carrà’s “Leaving the Theatre” (1909) and Giacomo Balla’s “the Hand of the Violinist” (1912). With their emphasis on modern urban experience and a technique matching “intense iridescence” with “universal dynamism” these revolutionary paintings still have the power to astonish. Intimate in scale, the collection is unrivalled in this country for the insight it provides into its period.
The visit will also present an opportunity to see the special exhibition “Paper Trail: Prints from the Merlini Collection”, which includes works on paper in a variety of printmaking techniques by artists such as Carrà, de Chirico and Guttuso.
The Estorick Collection has an excellent café and a pleasant garden.
