The Victoria and Albert Museum houses the Raphael Cartoons from the Royal collection (on loan since 1865). These are the full-scale designs, now approaching five hundred years old, from which the tapestries commissioned by Pope Leo X to hang in the Sistine chapel were woven. The subject matter of the cartoons was intended to add to the existing meaning of the chapel and to glorify the Medici pope. The visit will place the cartoons in the context of their times.
After Raphael had painted them the cartoons were sent to Brussels for weaving. That they should now be in London, indeed that they have survived at all, is remarkable.
The cartoons and their display may be of interest to students of A216, and will provide an additional opportunity for A103 students to begin looking at art.
