Vieux Lyon has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. To the Romans it was Lugdunum, the capital of
Gaul
, and the Théâtre Romain and the Odeon survive from that period. Nearby is the splendid Musée de la Civilisation Gallo-Romaine with wonderful mosaics. The Musée des Beaux-Arts boasts the finest collection of sculptures and paintings from every period of European art outside
Paris
, and other museums have displays reflecting the history of silk weaving to the Resistance. A must is an exploration of the traboules, the secret passages in and out of the apartment blocks and courtyards. And no visit would be complete without a visit to the cathedral and other churches.
So, a weekend exploring
Lyon
,
France
's second city, in early November is a great thing to do.
Lyon
is a city for walking and EATING, it's the gastronomic capital of France, and one of the most attractive and elegant of places.
