Description

Avignon is one of the most historic towns in France and because of its strategic position the site has been inhabited since c.4000 BC. Throughout most of the 14th century, the Papal court was based in Avignon and this resulted in the building of numerous churches, palaces, abbeys, etc, with a parallel secular community adding to the opulence of the city. All this led to a flourishing painting school under Simone Martini. Until the 18th century, it remained a mainly independent state administered by the Pope; however, after the Revolution, it became a part of France and a popular destination for scholars, artists, writers and visitors.  Very many buildings are well worth visiting including the cathedral, the Palais des Papes and the Petit Palais with a wonderful collection of Mediaeval and Renaissance art. And, of course, we can dance 'sur' (or sous) le pont St Benezet!   We will visit the largest Carthusian monastery (Chartreuse) in France at Villeneuve and the magnificent Pont du Gard (part of the Roman aqueduct), both within easy reach of Avignon. And, in early November, the temperature remains comparatively warm.....
