This lecture surveys Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim buildings in India illuminating their individual characteristics from the early Buddhist cave “Chaitya” to the Taj Mahal. Illustrations from James Fergusson’s History of Indian and Eastern Architecture (1876) will be included highlighting Victorian interpretations and drawing parallels with Western traditions.
