Art history has increasingly become engaged with issues of gender which can affect the conception, production and interpretation of art works. Gender is here described as the cultural construction of femininity as opposed to a biological sex. Notions of artistic creativity as a predominantly masculine characteristic will be discussed by looking at portraiture and narrative paintings. We will consider both male and female nudes and the notion of the gaze, and look at gender relations within classes, races or cultures. The issue of gender in architecture will also be considered (very briefly).
