Our walk begins at the Temple and takes us through the streets and sites familiar to Dr Samuel Johnson and his contemporaries. Gough Square, set in what is now a quiet backwater of the city, was once at the hub of literary London and this was not so just because Dr Johnson made it his home for eleven years. Writers of every description crowded into the maze of alleys and streets that wove around the Fleet Street area, because it was the centre of the publishing industry. We shall enjoy a guided tour of the house where Johnson lived and worked on the first comprehensive English dictionary which was published in 1755.
Members £10. Members’ guests £14 (includes admission).
Start 10.30am . Finish 1.00pm (approx).
